Østensjø Rederi chooses new Rolls-Royce design for offshore wind farm support vessel

Rolls-Royce has been selected to design and equip a new Service Operation Vessel for shipowner Østensjø Rederi. The vessel will support wind farm operations for DONG Energy.

The order is the first for a new ship design from Rolls-Royce developed specifically to support operations in shallow waters at offshore windfarms. The vessel will serve as the base for wind turbine technicians while they perform maintenance work on Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, off the coast of Lincolnshire, UK.

Johan Rokstad, Østensjø Rederi AS, chief executive officer, said, “We have worked closely with Rolls-Royce to develop a design we believe will be well suited to servicing the specific operational demands of supporting offshore wind farms. We look forward to continuing this good co-operation in carrying the project through to completion.”

The ship is designed with a high focus on seakeeping capabilities, excellent station keeping performance, improved comfort and safety on board, and reduced fuel consumption. The UT 540 WP was developed in close cooperation with the customer and benefits from over 40 years of UT ship design experience across 800 vessels.

As well as designing the vessel, Rolls-Royce will supply the diesel electric main machinery, consisting of frequency controlled electric driven azimuth thrusters, super silent mounted transverse thrusters, DP2 dynamic positioning system, power electrical system, deck machinery, and the latest generation Acon automation and control system.

Helge Gjerde, Rolls-Royce, President Commercial - Marine, said, “We are delighted that Østensjø Rederi and DONG Energy have chosen the new Rolls-Royce UT 540 WP design against intense competition. As more wind farms are built further from shore and in more demanding conditions we see opportunities to use our extensive offshore experience to diversify into an exciting new market.”

This vessel will be built at Astilleros Gondan in Spain.

Østensjø Rederi orders second Rolls-Royce designed offshore wind farm support vessel

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with the yard Astilleros Gondan in Spain to design and equip a second Service Operation Vessel for shipowner Østensjø Rederi. The vessel will support wind farm operations for DONG Energy.

The repeat order is for a new ship design from Rolls-Royce developed specifically to support operations in shallow waters at offshore windfarms. The order also includes an extensive equipment package.

Helge Gjerde, Rolls-Royce, Director Offshore & Merchant Solutions, said: “We are delighted that Østensjø Rederi and DONG Energy have chosen to exercise an option with Astilleros Gondan for a second vessel of our new concept. Developing advanced vessels for the renewable energy sector is a perfect way to make use of our vast offshore experience and diversify our Marine business.”

The award winning UT 540 WP was developed in close cooperation with the customer and benefits from over 40 years of UT ship design experience across 800 vessels. The new design for offshore windfarm support has a high focus on seakeeping capabilities, station keeping performance, improved comfort and safety on board, and reduced fuel consumption.

The first wind farm vessel contract to Astilleros Gondan was announced in October 2015 and both vessels will serve as the base for wind turbine technicians while they perform maintenance work on offshore windfarms. A motion compensated gangway system with an adjustable pedestal will be installed to ensure safe operations and optimal uptime. The first vessel ordered will work on Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, while the second will work on the Hornsea Project One wind farm, both off the coast of the UK.

As well as designing the vessel, Rolls-Royce will supply the diesel electric main machinery, consisting of frequency controlled electric driven azimuth thrusters, super silent mounted transverse thrusters, DP2 dynamic positioning system, power electrical system, deck machinery, and the latest generation Acon automation and control system.

Double naming ceremony

This weekend has been busy for Østensjø Rederi, who named and launched Edda Mistral Friday 2nd February and named Edda Passat Saturday.

Both new buildings are purpose-built for Ørsted’s wind farms off the coast of UK. Edda Passat will be delivered last week of February and thereafter start operations at Race Bank wind farm. Her sister vessel Edda Mistral will be delivered in August and operate at the Hornsea 1 wind farm. The vessels have the logistic base and home port in Grimsby, UK. The Godmothers of the vessels are Rebecca Goff, Edda Passat, and Trine Borum Bojson, Edda Mistral, both working for Ørsted Wind Power.

The vessels are built by Astilleros Gondan in Spain, who incl. these two have delivered 13 vessels to Østensjø Rederi since 2005. The vessels are Service Operation Vessels (SOV) that will be used as mothership for the Technicians engaged in maintenance of wind turbines. There will be 40 Technicians living on board in addition to a maritime crew of 20 persons, all in separate cabins. The accommodation is of very high standard and the vessels provide all facilities that the Charterer requires to carry out their operations. The Technicians are transferred to the wind turbines via motion compensated gangway system and the cargo is transferred via motion compensated crane. Alternative means of transfer of personnel and cargo is the large workboat installed on board.

Upon delivery, the vessels will commence their contracts for www.orsted.com with period 5 years firm + 5 x 1 optional years.

Østensjø Rederi commenced the operation at Race Bank wind farm in August 2017 and are very happy that the first new build soon will cover the contract. The fact that Ørsted, being the largest Offshore wind operator, have put the faith in us is very important. Østensjø Rederi expects Offshore wind to be a very important part of their operations in the future, says Kenneth Walland, CEO Østensjø Rederi.

The Edda MistralService Operation Vessel (SOV) built by GONDAN Shipbuilders in Spain has started sea trials. The vessel left the Ria del Eo to head towards the Port of Gijón, where she will be for the next few weeks to complete her sea trials programme.

Built by GONDAN for the Norwegian shipowner Østensjø Rederi A / S, the vessel will operate for Ørsted on the Race Bank and Hornsea Project One wind farms off the coast of the United Kingdom.

Edda Mistralis sister vessel to the Edda Passat, also built by GONDAN. Both measure about 81m length and 17m beam. They have the capacity to accommodate up to 40 technicians who will perform maintenance tasks on the wind farms, and a crew of about 20 people.

Both vessels are equipped with an UPTIME 23m length heave compensated walk-to-work gangway, a 3D compensated crane and a crew transfer vessel landing system with bunkering facility. In addition to the gangway, the vessel is equipped with a Helideck and a 11m daughter craft that will allow the safe transfer of maintenance technicians to the offshore wind turbines.

Sale of Edda Passat

Haugesund, 9 February 2024: Edda Wind ASA (“Edda Wind” or the “Company”) today announces that the Company, through its subsidiary West Energy AS, has entered into a sale and purchase agreement regarding the sale of all outstanding shares in Puerto de Calella S.L., the registered owner of the vessel Edda Passat. The transaction is expected to take place during mid March 2024.

The proceeds from the sale will be used for general corporate purposes, including the repayment of outstanding debt related to Edda Passat.

The rationale for the sale of the vessel is to optimise the Company’s fleet strategy, including alignment of vessel design. The Company has eight dedicated offshore wind vessels under construction – one SOV and seven CSOVs, all with modern design and with large flexibility built in. All newbuild vessels are prepared for zero-emission utilising liquid organic hydrogen carrier and/or methanol as an energy source.

Edda Wind remains firm on its strategy to be a leading player within offshore wind and is currently the largest player in the space including all vessels under construction.
