A disaster since 2 years with BIRKA STOCKHOLM. Was longtime for sale for 100 Mio. Euro ! The problem is, that this ship is built in 2004 - but with the standard of cruise-ships from ca. 1990. All other cruise-ships built in this century normally has so much balcony-cabins as possible.
Now today - a cruise-ship without balcony-cabins is nearly nothing worth anymore. Furthermore there is no really highlight onboard, no special-design etc. . F.ex. VIKING CINDERELLA (1989) has a big panoramic window over 5 floors and big theatre-bar-area ("Nightclub") over 3 floors with big shows every day. SILJA can offer a big pedestrian-area in the middle of her ferries. But there is no reason for to "test" this ship BIRKA STOCKHOLM. The size is also too small, to inefficiency, small bar-area, small pool-area, normal standard-restaurants - so there is no reason for just to book this ship. People in Stockholm can choose daily cruising with a number of better and bigger ships from VIKING LINE, SILJA LINE, TALLINK and many other big "really" cruise-ships (AIDA, TUI, MSC, COSTA etc.) . There will be no buyer today and in the next years. Maybe for 10 Mio. it is possible to sell her - but the owners want much more because the ship is not really so old on the paper - but from the layout and design she is from ca. 1990. It is "ok" to stay there 1 night onboard - and for this she was built - but for longer cruises this ship is much too small, all public-spaces and rooms inside and all cabins are very narrow and small also. BIRKA STOCKHOLM is the opposite of generously - therefore there is also no future as Expeditions-ship. Look this video from 2007 from a 23-hours-cruise with only a few people onboard. If it is fullbooked with 1800 people it is catastrophic... .

Only to compare:
The JEWEL OF THE SEAS has exactly the same age as the BIRKA STOCKHOLM - but she looks circa 15 years more modern - with many big balcony-cabins and suites, very big spaces and halls inside, gigantic atrium and skybar, very big pool-area etc. . And this is already one of the oldest and smallest of the Royal Carribean fleet. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dMDxCu9Nvb4/maxresdefault.jpg
So who is now interested to buy a 2004-built ship with a standard from 1990 for extrem much money ?
Also the size is a problem - today 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 Pax in double-bed-cabins is normal and efficient for a modern cruise-ship - but not 1800 Pax in 8qm 4-bunkbed-cabins. And for an exclusive expedition-ship it is to big and the opposite of luxury with 177m x 28m.

Also an expensive renovation with big balcony-cabins will not be much better - then there is still a mini-pool, mini-bar, standard-restaurant, very small cabins etc. . I see only these both options:
1) continue 23-hours-Tax-free-cruises to Mariehamn for the next couple of years so cheap as possible with Filipino-crew, Bahamas-registration etc. - maybe also in change with cruises Helsinki-Mariehamn - month A from Stockholm, month B from Helsinki etc. . So they can always offer cheaper cruise-prices as Viking and Silja Line and the cheapest people (f.ex. a 18-years-birthay-teenager-group) will then always book BIRKA and is also happy with a very small disco onboard. There are always many swedish and finish people who need these 23-hours-cruises only for to buy some bottles vodka/whiskey much cheaper than on land - so id VIKING offers cruises f.ex. from 23,- Euro, SILJA maybe from 30,-, BIRKA can offer it from 15,- / 16,- / 17,- / 18,- and has good chances for to get all "cheap" people without any special expectations. To be "the LIDL on sea" can be chance.
OR
2) sell it now for 8, 9, 10 Mio. Euro (what is ca. the double-scrap-price) f.ex. as hotel-/accomodation-/refugees-ship and forget it. The former big cruise-ferry from St.Peter Line is now an accomodation-ship, many big old ferries are in use in Italy for refugees-accomodation/quarantäne, use for conferences, sport-events, hospital-ship etc. . It was a big error made in 2002/2003 when this ship was ordered with a much too old design and too small layout. So better now if the owner ECKERÖ forget it and take the few millions from a sale for to invest (with some other money from the ferry-routes) in the next (used) ferry f.ex. to have 2 ferries on the busy route Tallinn-Helsinki instead of only 1 or a more modern ship on the Grisslehamn-route to Aaland. To hold this BIRKA STOCKHOLM longer will costs only more money and will not change the situation. Also in 3, 5 or 8 years nobody will pay more for this ship.
