Double order for Celebrity at STX France

The subsidiary of RCCL Groups places an order for 2 new-design vessels from the French shipyard which has a full orderbook

Celebrity Cruises has ordered 2 new-design ships from STX France St Nazaire; no price was given.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. signed a letter of intent to build a pair of 117,000 GT ships, whose delivery is due in fall 2018 and early 2020, developed under the project name EDGE.

The 2,900-passenger vessels will build upon modern luxury experience of Millennium- and Solstice-class vessels; Project EDGE design is intended to deliver'small ship itineraries with large ship amenities. In fact the size is smaller than the Solstice series, the largest of which is the 126,000 GT Celebrity Reflection, which has one more deck than first 4 ships, all built at Meyer Werft.

“The addition confirms our long-term strategic plan of moderate capacity growth and continues the momentum the brand has achieved in the premium segment” said RCCL supremo Richard Fain.

“Project EDGE offers STX France the opportunity to again set a new standard for modern iconic architecture” commented Celebrity president Michael Bayley.

“This is a dramatic step forward in premium cruise ship design” outlined STX France managing director Laurent Castaing. “These vessels represent a significant leap forward in environmentally friendly ship design, benefiting from new technologies to drive significant fuel efficiency and an ongoing process to ensure the extensive use of sustainable materials”.

Celebrity Cruises Is Getting 2 Additional Edge Class Ships

Celebrity Cruises parent company Royal Caribbean international Ltd. has agreed to order two more Edge class ships with STX France. The cruise line already has two Edge class ships on order to be delivered in 2018 and 2020.

The new Edge class ships will be a totally new vessel for the cruise line at 117,000 gross tons. The ships will have a passenger capacity of 2,900. The new ships announced today will be delivered in at the end of 2021 and 2022.

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises said:
“Although our first Edge-class vessel is still over two years away from delivery, there has been a tremendous amount of interest around the new standard of style Edge-class will introduce, Solstice-class ushered in a new era of design for modern cruise ships, and Edge-class will not disappoint as the new generation of high style and design.”

Not much details is known about the Edge class but we can expect more over the coming months from Celebrity Cruises. Cruise Hive will keep readers updated on any new developments. Sister cruise line Royal Caribbean is also ordering another Oasis class ship which you can ready about here.

Successfull transfer of Celebrity Edge

Saint-Nazaire, 22nd of January 2018 : the first Celebrity Edge exit - the 1st contact with water ou quelque chose d’approchant.

In the late afternoon, in Saint-Nazaire, Celebrity Edge left her mounting dock, heading to the port. The future top of the range cruise ship, a RCCL order, was transferred into reverse to the Vieux Môle. A true moving time, which followed the ship floating out. After an about turn to present herself in front of the Joubert dock, this 306 meters long cruise ship got to her outfitting on the Penhoët quay, towed by 7 tugs. An impressive manoeuvre, 7 months after the coin ceremony, which marked the beginning of her assembly.
This transfer was initially planned last week-end but was postponed on Monday the 22nd January due to bad weather conditions.

The ship is due for delivery in October 2018.

CELEBRITY EDGE

Suiterne omfatter Edge Villas i to etager med udendørs pool. De to ikoniske suiter bliver flådens største med over 230 m2 plads både inden- og udendørs plus 7,5 m2 omgivende glasvinduer, der giver direkte udsyn til havet fra opholdsstuen, soveværelset og spisestuen.

Celebrity Edge Delivered

After four years of planning and a 23 month construction period, the 2,900-guest Celebrity Edge was delivered today at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. At the same time, the yard laid the keep for the next Edge-class ship in the Celebrity Apex.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain and Celebrity's President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo hosted a ceremony aboard Celebrity Edge, while docked in the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The Celebrity Executive Team were also in attendance along with shipyard officials, including General Manager Laurent Castaing, and 1,377 crew members from 72 different countries.

"The Celebrity team has done an outstanding job and I cannot thank the Chantiers de l'Atlantique team enough for delivering this game-changing ship and for their ongoing partnership," said Fain. "Their work continues to transform the way our guests experience the world."

"Today is a very special day for all of us as we have been eagerly anticipating this moment for more than four years," said Lutoff-Perlo. "There are so many aspects of Celebrity Edge that are more groundbreaking than we could have ever imagined, and it is all a testament to the hard work, creativity and talent of everyone who helped bring this magnificent ship to life."

"Thanks to the confidence Celebrity Cruises granted us and to the exceptional level of cooperation between our respective teams, we are proud to have designed and built one of the most innovative cruise ships ever," added Castaing. "This achievement demonstrates once again our capacity to deliver right on time ships of the highest quality to our most demanding customers."

Following the Celebrity Edge check-signing and delivery ceremony, attendees made their way across the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard for the ceremonial keel laying of Celebrity Apex, where a 762-ton block was lifted in the air and a lucky coin was placed on the dock before the block was lowered into position.

On November 6, 2018, Celebrity Edge will begin her transatlantic voyage to her home port at T25 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Her inaugural season will be spent sailing alternating seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Celebrity Edge's UK debut: Apex plans and trade reaction

Celebrity Cruises will host “easily double” the number of agents onboard its forthcoming ship Celebrity Apex next year than during Celebrity Edge’s recent European debut.

Jo Rzymowska Celebrity Edge.jpg

Apex will be named in Southampton in spring 2020, the line’s first British christening since Celebrity Eclipse in 2010. Some 900 agents sailed onboard Edge during a two-night European showcase last week.

Jo Rzymowska, Celebrity’s vice-president and managing director UK, Ireland and Asia Pacific, told TTG while the schedule for Apex’s UK visit was “not fully finalised”, two pre-inaugural sailings were likely.

“It will be the hottest ticket in town,” she said. “We’ll be able to entertain more partners, and we want to make sure agents get the chance to appreciate what Celebrity Cruises is all about – we want to bring energy and excitement to the market.”

Discussing potential new features onboard Apex, Rzymowska said despite the vessel being a sister ship to Edge – the second of five planned Edge-class vessels – “there is always something slightly different about family members”.

After launch, Apex will cruise five ex-UK itineraries before being based in the Mediterranean for the rest of the summer. The lead-up to Apex, Rzymowska said, would echo that of Edge, which launched last December, using “reveal events” to “build up the excitement”.

“We can bring Edge-class to the land and give a flavour of what to expect,” said Rzymowska.

Claire Stirrup, UK and Ireland sales director, said “a real mix” of agents had come onboard Edge, from “loyal trade partners” yet to experience an Edge-class ship to those who had never sold cruise.

Stirrup also revealed overnight fam trips on Edge to Barcelona and Rome would be held in June, August and September, giving agents the chance to experience life onboard.

Future Edge captain says diversity ‘increases productivity’
Future Edge captain says diversity ‘increases productivity’

Celebrity Edge’s incoming captain – the first American woman to captain a cruise ship – said the industry has made huge progress on gender diversity, although more remains to be done.

“I’m looking forward to the gender gap decreasing even more, but we’ve made incredible strides,” Kate McCue told TTG. “When I joined Celebrity in 2015, just 3% of the bridge team fleet-wide were female. Today, across our fleet, it’s 22%.

“Women have certain traits that can’t be replicated, and I think empathy is a big one,” she added. “Whenever you introduce diversity into an organisation and get a different perspective, whether it's gender-based, race, religion, cultural background, sexual orientation, what comes about is an increase in productivity and creativity.”

It comes after Celebrity Cruises released new research suggesting girls are still less likely than boys to consider a career as a mechanic, financial trader or a sportsperson.

McCue is currently onboard Celebrity Equinox but joins Celebrity Edge in August along with, she hopes, her cat Bug Naked, who “loves being onboard”.
