Celebrity Orders New Ship for Galapagos Program

Celebrity Cruises will debut the Celebrity Flora in 2019, a new ship designed by year-round expedition operations in the Galapagos.

"Celebrity Flora marks another example of our revolutionary ship design by allowing the destination and its environment to influence every decision we've made," said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. "From the luxurious all-suite accommodations to industry-first, eco-friendly innovations, we created a ship that brings a new level of luxury, sustainability and natural exploration to the region. Guests will feel as though they're boarding a high-end yacht for a week of unparalleled adventures, and they are!"

The ship will have accommodations for 100 passengers.

"We are very pleased with the announcement of Celebrity Cruises' decision to build a cruise vessel with cutting-edge technology, designed specifically to operate around our wonderful islands," said Enrique Ponce de León, Ecuador's Minister of Tourism. "Celebrity Flora will undoubtedly mark a very important milestone in the tourism development of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, offering high quality and sustainable tourism."

Among the highlights, the Marina is the primary point of access to the ship and can accommodate up to three Zodiacs at once, reducing transport time to and from land and allowing more time for guests to explore the practically untouched islands. While onboard guests will unwind in the Sunset Lounge, find solace in The Vista, an open-air hideaway with 360-degree views, cocoon-style loungers and private cabanas, and enjoy the breathtaking surrounds in the floor-to-ceiling glass-wrapped Observatory, said Celebrity.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily in the Seaside Restaurant. The Ocean Grill offers a casual dining space, panoramic views and Dinner Under the Stars, or guests can choose from an indulgent in-room dining experience.

The Celebrity Flora is one of the most energy-efficient ships in its class, the company said, with a 15 percent reduction of fuel consumption and equivalently fewer air emissions, thanks to the introduction of an advanced propulsion system, hull configuration and specially designed diesel engines, the company said.

Celebrity will reduce the need for plastics onboard by introducing in-room water filtration stations and by converting sea water and air conditioning condensation into pure, fresh water. Any materials that can be recycled, reused or donated will be as part of a strict waste management system.

"I think this is a clear example of an intelligent investment, not only because the boat design was thought with the characteristics of the Galapagos, but because it is based on the best technology available to protect a Natural Heritage of Humanity," said Walter Bustos, Director of Galapagos National Park. "This proposal is a mix of experiences and education so that each visitor returns to their country with a different mindset, more committed to the conservation of the environment, which is one of the objectives of the Galapagos National Park "

Celebrity Flora will sail from Baltra year-round, making her first sailing on May 26, 2019.

Er det er også et likt søsterskip til under bygging som bygg nr. 489 og IMO 9837937?

Hi Oddgeir, I was also a bit surprised that the second ship is not mentioned. It is already in the registers with an IMO number and a yard number as you found out. All discussions about this order have also mentioned two ships before the press release came out. Perhaps the second ship is still an option. I am not sure. Time will tell...

Silversea also signed a contract with Dutch shipbuilder Shipyard De Hoop to construct a new expedition vessel, named Silver Origin, that will serve the Galapagos Islands itinerary currently sailed by Silver Galapagos. The new ship is expected for delivery in March 2020.

“We are delighted to have entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft on the Silver Evolution series and De Hoop for Silver Origin,” says Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Silversea’s Executive Chairman. “With our guests in mind, we are pushing the boundaries of ultra-luxury cruising, as well as expedition cruising in the Galápagos Islands and beyond, redefining the concept of immersive travel.”

“We are excited and proud to receive this order,” said Patrick A.B.M. Janssens MA, CEO, Shipyard De Hoop. “It is not only about building the best small expedition cruise vessel, but also about building and maintaining a high-quality partnership with Royal Caribbean and Silversea.”

Dutch Builder Cuts Steel for Silversea’s New Expedition Ship

Dutch shipbuilder Shipyard De Hoop has launched the construction of a new expedition cruise vessel for cruise company Silversea Cruises.

The shipbuilder held a steel cutting ceremony for the new 100-guest ship, to be named Silver Origin, on October 8, 2018.
The vessel is scheduled to join its owner in March 2020. Once delivered, Silver Origin would be deployed to serve the Galapagos Islands itinerary currently sailed by Silver Galapagos.

The ultra-luxury and expedition cruise company unveiled the order earlier this week. Separately, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft to build two new vessels in a new Evolution Class. The first of these is expected to join its owner in 2022.

“There is tremendous potential in the ultra-luxury and expedition markets of the cruise industry, and we believe discerning travelers will embrace the exciting designs Silversea is imagining for them,” said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, which finalized its two-thirds acquisition of Silversea earlier this year.

From summer 2020, the 100-passenger, all-suite Silver Origin will build on Silversea’s accrued know-how in the Galapagos Islands to form deeper connections between guests and the destination. In addition to the ship’s pioneering design and guests’ unique experiences ashore – which will be led by Silversea’s Expedition Team, who are certified by the National Park of the Galapagos – this immersive concept will see guests enjoy Ecuadorian culture on board, through insightful content, including daily briefings, lectures, videos, and scientific information; authentic local cuisine, prepared by expert Ecuadorian chefs; and various other luxurious enhancements. Perfectly crafted and with the utmost attention to the comfort of guests, the interior design of Silver Origin will whisper luxury, inspired by the understated Italian elegance that pervades Silversea’s fleet of intimate ships. Yet, it will also take influence from the Galapagos’ unique natural environment to strengthen guests’ engagement with the destination, with each space enhancing the experience. Bright, colourful motifs and regional materials will accentuate the design. Silver Origin’s public spaces were designed by HBA Miami, while GEM – Design for Cruise Ships, the team behind the interior design of Silver Muse, oversaw the interior design of the ship’s suites.

Silver Origin
will be one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships ever built, thanks to state-of-the-art technology and solutions designed specifically for sailing the Galapagos Islands: the ship’s dynamic positioning system will allow Silver Origin to automatically maintain position to protect the sea floor; fresh water purification systems, installed in each suite, will enable the ship to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bottles; an advanced Waste Water Treatment System will meet or exceed the strictest regulations in the market; and Silver Origin will meet the highest standards of energy efficiency in the segment. The technological innovation of Silver Origin will complement Silversea’s significant efforts to make a positive impact on the natural and economic environment of the Galapagos Islands, including the cruise line’s contribution to the Floreana Island Ecological Restoration Project.

Silver Origin will elevate our industry-leading offering in the Galapagos Islands, unlocking meaningful experiences for guests, as they travel in ultimate luxury,” says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s CEO. “Ever since the early planning phases, every decision on Silver Origin has been made to strengthen the connection between our guests and this spectacular, unique destination.”
“The natural beauty of the Galapagos Islands makes it one of the world’s best cruise destinations,” says Fernando Delgado, Silversea's Vice President and General Manager of Canodros C.L. “Silver Origin will enhance Silversea’s award-winning cruise experience here, raising it to an even more incredible level for guests’ enjoyment. I am excited to personally welcome Silver Origin to the region, and introduce the ship to our valued guests and trade partners.”

Silver Origin will see the highest crew-to-guest ratio (1:1.16) and the highest ratio of qualified guides per guest (1:10) in the Galapagos Islands, enabling unparalleled levels of personalised service. This will extend to the in-suite experience, as Silver Origin will be the only ship in the Galapagos Islands to offer butler service to all suites. For more than five years, Silversea has taken guests closer to the authentic beauty of the Galapagos Islands with the best luxury cruise product in the archipelago; the cruise line’s Silver Galapagos, which will be replaced by Silver Origin, recently garnered the top spot among small ships in four award categories at the 2019 Cruise Critic’s Cruisers’ Choice Awards, including ‘Best Overall Ship,’ ‘Best Shore Excursions,’ and ‘Best Value’ for the second consecutive year.

Please note: Images representing Silver Origin® reflect current design concepts and may include artistic renderings and/or images of other Silversea Ships. All ship features, experiences, and itineraries are subject to change without notice.

I have to say I like the second ship better than the first! Meanwhile, the first one, CELEBRITY FLORA, is almost finished (with a slight delay of about a month I think). Sea trials said to will take place this weekend. Nice video here:

Looks because second vessel came into the picture with my comment "Er det er også et likt søsterskip til under bygging som bygg nr. 489 og IMO 9837937?" ;)

Exactly. This order started out as 1 firm + 1 option for Celebrity, with the optional ship provisionally known as CELEBRITY ORIGIN. However, in the middle of 2018, Royal Caribbean completed its takeover of Silversea. The optional ship was then heavily modified and ordered for Silversea as SILVER ORIGIN instead. I understand that, if the first two deliveries are successful, there may be up to four more orders in the pipeline. Hope this clarifies.
