Singapore, 11 September 2017 – Vard Holdings Limited (“VARD”), one of the major global designers and shipbuilders of specialized vessels, is pleased to announce that it has secured a contract for the design and construction of one expedition cruise vessel for Coral Expeditions of Australia.

Newly developed by Vard Design in Norway in close cooperation with the customer, the vessel is specially designed for small ship expedition cruises to remote and exotic destinations in the regions of Asia-Pacific. The vessel of VARD 6 01 design, measuring a total length of 93.5 meters with a beam of 17.2 meters, will have a guest accommodation capacity of 120. True to the Coral Expeditions business concept, the ship environment is geared for daily shore expeditions, lectures and briefings, with high standards of comfort and care. Delivery is scheduled from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam in 1Q 2019.

CEO and Executive Director Mr. Roy Reite says, “I would like to welcome Coral Expeditions to VARD. We are honored to be chosen as the preferred designer and shipbuilder for their new expedition cruise vessel. VARD’s highly experienced shipbuilders and our specialized subsidiaries in Norway and abroad look forward to working together with Coral’s team.”

With a 34 year history of innovation, Coral Expeditions is recognized as Australia’s longest established and most awarded expedition cruise operator. Starting with environmentally-sensitive cruises on the Great Barrier Reef, the fleet has grown to three Australian-flagged ships that include two oceangoing catamarans, Coral Expeditions I and Coral Expeditions II, and the flagship 63m Coral Discoverer. Headquartered in Cairns, Coral Expeditions offers expedition cruises to largely unseen parts of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the Kimberley region, Cape York and Arnhem Land, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Islands of the South Pacific, Tasmania, and South East Asia.

Vard Vung Tua floats out Coral Expeditions’ Coral Adventurer

More than 200 staff who have been working on the construction of Coral Expeditions’ new flagship, Coral Adventurer, at the Vard Vung Tau shipyard in Vietnam, celebrated her float out.
Also in the crowd were the specialists responsible for the interior furnishings, including the wood panelling and staterooms and public areas.

It took two days to relocate the 120-passenger vessel from the yard, a subsidiary of Italy’s Fincantieri, to the floating dock, causing high excitement, according to gm Mark Fifield.

‘To date, construction has involved expertise from across the world, involving more than 800 workers,’ Fifield said.

On track for April's maiden voyage
He said Coral Adventurer is firmly on track for her sold-out maiden voyage in April next year.

As previously reported, the Australian-flag ship will make a maiden 18-night voyage from Singapore to Darwin on April 24, 2019.

From May until October she will cruise the Kimberley between Darwin and Broome. Afterwards she will sail new itineraries in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Cairns-based Coral Expeditions, which has a strong representation in the United Kingdom and the United States, is currently hiking its sales efforts in Germany and the Nordic countries.

Coral Adventurer Launched

Coral Expeditions has officially launched its new vessel, Coral Adventurer, as the vessel touched water for the first time at a shipyard in Vietnam earlier this month.

The float out ceremony, which involved two days of relocating the vessel from yard onto the floating dock, was a key milestone for Australia’s Coral Expeditions.

“Excitement was at a real high with Coral Adventurer now officially in the water and her delivery drawing nearer,” said Mark Fifield, Group General Manager, Coral Expeditions.

“To date, the construction project has involved expertise from across the world with over 800 workers involved. We were delighted to be joined by over 200 shipyard staff who celebrated this special moment with us, for whom Coral Adventurer build has been a labour of love over the past 11 months.”

Also at hand were specialists and designers involved in the installation of all interior furnishings including the wood paneling, feature stonework, stateroom fit out and the ship’s public areas.

With her build firmly on track and on time, Coral Expeditions expect no delays preparing their fourth vessel for her sold-out maiden voyage in April 2019, the company said.

Sea trials will commence in February, handover in late March, followed by shakedown cruises in April.

Her official launch will be celebrated in Singapore on April 23 2019 before she enters service on her first 18-night departure.

The vessel will then arrive for the first time in Australian waters for an official welcome in Darwin on May 13.

The 120-passenger Coral Adventurer has been specially designed by Coral Expeditions, marrying the company’s 34 years of experience building and operating expedition ships with latest advances in marine and environmental technology, the company said.

Fifield continued: “Coral Adventurer has received a positive response from the market with extremely strong forward bookings and charter interest,” said Fifield. “We have had an overwhelming response to the recently launched 60 day 35th Anniversary Circumnavigation of Australia, which is nearing capacity after only two weeks in the market and this instils great confidence amongst our team and stakeholders to action further fleet development into the future.”

The ship’s lightweight dual Xplorer expedition tenders, a trademark feature of all Coral Expeditions vessels, will extend the capabilities of the ship by allowing fast transit for all passengers with open views on shore excursions and deeper exploration into rivers and beaches.

A new multi-purpose space, the Barralong Room, will host interpretive activities and projects that connect guests in an engaging format throughout their voyage experience.

Coral Expeditions Launches Coral Adventurer
April 24, 2019

Last night, Coral Expeditions celebrated the official launch of its fourth and largest expedition ship, 120-guest Coral Adventurer, at a ceremony in Singapore.

Coral Expeditions’ senior management, key stakeholders and global media guests joined onboard.

Quek Peck Lim was named godmother of the new vessel and blessed her launch.

Following a welcome by Senior Master Gary Wilson and Executive Director Paul Chacko from Coral Expeditions, guests were given a walk-through of the ship.

Guests were also taken for a sunset cruise along the Singapore coast to experience first-hand the new ship at sea. Indigenous leader and performer, Dr David Hudson, presented a traditional gift to welcome her to the Australian fleet and entertained with Indigenous music during the evening.

“It has been a rewarding journey from the initial conception of Coral Adventurer to now seeing her embark on open waters. The build process tracked ahead of schedule and on budget. We have stuck to our conviction of a true expedition product, with capacity limited to only 120 guests so we do not dilute the guest experience,” said Mark Fifield, Group General Manager at Coral Expeditions.

“The future for Coral Adventurer is bright with unique itineraries planned to showcase her capabilities for extended expeditions in remote areas.”

The ship will set sail for Darwin today on its sold-out maiden voyage “In the Trail of Tasman”, an 18- day expedition cruise through the Indonesian Archipelago. The adventure will retrace the historic explorations of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who was first to map the coastlines of New Zealand, New Guinea and Northern Australia in the 17th century.

Following its inaugural sailing, the Coral Adventurer will arrive in Australian waters for the first time with an official ceremonial welcome in Darwin on May 12.

That evening, she will commence a 10-night venture through West Papua on its second itinerary, “Wildlife and Warriors”, before returning to Darwin to resume the Kimberley season.

Coral Expeditions Senior Master Gary Wilson added: “Our itineraries are like no other as the combination of expedition cruising in remote coastal waters, matched with our warm Australian hospitality and decades of expedition experience ensure guests enjoy pushing the boundaries and taking travellers even closer to places that haven’t been explored before.”

Coral Expeditions orders second expedition cruise ship from VARD after Coral Adventurer success

VARD is cementing its relationship with Australia’s Coral Expeditions following the success of the recently delivered Coral Adventurer vessel, built at Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam. Delivered in April, the 93.4 meter ship, of VARD 6 01 design, has commenced commercial operations in the Asia-Pacific region. Its on-time delivery, high quality finish and excellent feedback has resulted in the contract for a second vessel with Coral Expeditions – Coral Geographer.

Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer have been tailored to meet growing demand for Coral Expeditions’ expedition product in the Australian cruise market. With a focus on intimacy, high quality and the optimal passenger experience, the vessels will allow its 120 passengers to get closer to exotic regional locations in style, comfort and safety. Featuring advanced expedition tender capabilities and accommodation across four decks – ranging from Bridge Deck Balcony Suites, Bridge Deck and Explorer Deck Balcony Staterooms, to Coral Deck Staterooms – the ships environment is both comfortable and functional, allowing for relaxation, socializing, and daily shore expeditions.

Coral Geographer will be delivered in Q4 2020, and is already well advanced in production at Vard Vung Tau. Following market feedback, she will feature an increased proportion of Bridge Deck Balcony suites – up from two to six suites, each featuring a spacious horizon bath.

Full-service build
VARD CEO and Executive Director Roy Reite is delighted with the outcome of the project, the first ever expedition cruise vessel built entirely at Vard Vung Tau, especially given that its success has led to further collaboration with a valued customer.

“This is an attractive, high quality and effective expedition cruise vessel for a greatly respected regional shipowner and operator,” Reite comments. “Coral Expeditions is leading a strong Australian market by virtue of its commitment to delivering outstanding service and routes in first class vessels. Vard Vung Tau has, from the outset, worked to mirror those standards with a project that has seen the team, in association with the owner and our global network, complete every aspect of the build.”

“As with the entire portfolio of offshore and specialized passenger vessels the yard has constructed over recent years, this ship was delivered on time, with complete customer satisfaction. That is demonstrated by the commitment from Coral Expeditions to build a new vessel here with the team. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their dedication, and Coral Expeditions for its excellent collaboration.”

Fulfilling ambition
Vard Vung Tau constructed the Coral Adventurer hull, while also carrying out all outfitting, installation, testing and finalizing. Vard Accommodation delivered the interior. Alongside its own performance capabilities, the ship also boasts two 65 PAX capacity “Xplorer” aluminium tender boats and six heavy duty inflatable boats for special discovery trips. The 1271 dwt ship is designed by Vard Design in Norway with a high focus on environmentally friendly solutions. Alongside its passenger accommodation it offers cabins for up to 42 crew members.

Paul Chacko, Executive Director, Coral Expeditions, comments: “Coral Adventurer replicated the proven layout, look and feel, and expedition tender capabilities of our other three ships but added new amenities such as a passenger elevator, gym and an open galley to enhance the guest experience. The ship features Australian-designed interiors with natural stone and timber. Coral Geographer will continue that style and further build out our bluewater fleet. Our company has been operating expedition cruises for 34 years and we were clear about what we wanted. It was important to choose a shipyard that understood our high ambitions and had the capability, expertise and infrastructure to help us realize them.”

Mark Fifield, Group General Manager, says: “We were part of the shipbuilding team from day one, from concept design, to building the ship and getting her ready to sail. Together, we have had a steady course, and we are proud to be sailing this amazing vessel. We thank the VARD team for their professionalism in delivering Coral Adventurer on time and to specification. We look forward to continuing collaboration on Coral Geographer”.
