This is the terrifying moment a giant ferry reversed into a docked cruise ship in the port of Barcelona.

The authorities say the accident is 'unusual', particularly because visibility was good at the time.

The incident happened at about 2pm when the ferry 'Fantastic' of the company Grandi Navi Veloci (NGV), from Tangier, Morocco, collided with the cruise ship Viking Star, which was docked in Terminal B of the port.

At this stage, it is believed no-one has been injured and the emergency services are at the scene evaluating the damage.

An investigation is already underway to find out if it was caused by a mechanical failure or human error.

Union officials say the incident could have caused a tragedy and want urgent answers.

Witnesses say the ferry appeared to lose its engine power whilst docking and appeared to drift backwards, without any way of controlling it, until it collided with the cruise ship.

At one stage, the ferry dropped anchor to try and stop it moving. A video of the accident was taken from a nearby crane.

The Fantastic, 180 metres in length and owned by the same shipping company that until a few days ago had two ferries in Barcelona as police hotels, had arrived from Tangier at dawn and was going to continue its journey to Genoa.

The Viking Star is a modern cruise liner of 228 metres in length, although of small capacity, it is considered a 'boat-boutique'. On this trip, it was carrying 820 passengers, who arrived on Thursday morning from Valencia and had planned to continue this afternoon to Marseille.

At the moment the two ships are still moored in port. In addition to investigating the reasons for the collision, experts have to assess the damage on both ships to see if they can continue their respective trips.

A spokesman for Barcelona port said: 'Today, around 2pm, there has been a slight collision between the GNV Fantastic ferry and the Viking Star cruise ship in the Port of Barcelona, in front of Terminal B. There have been no injuries and the damage is being evaluated. The damage is apparently minimal.'
