New Green RoRo Vessels for Finnlines – designed by KNUD E. HANSEN

KNUD E. HANSEN has signed a contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard, China, for developing the Basic Design of three large RoRo vessels, based on the Finnlines / Grimaldi / KNUD E. HANSEN design.

The vessels are based on the same hull as the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation vessels and are thus sister vessels but customized to the needs of Finnlines with regards to heavy cargo and operation in cold climates. The customization has been developed in close cooperation between Finnlines and KNUD E. HANSEN.

The vessels, which are expected to be delivered from 2021, will have a length of 238 metres, a beam of 34 metres, and are designed to meet the highest Finnish/Swedish ice class, 1A Super. The design is aimed to be flexible for all types of RoRo cargo with a capacity of 5,800 lane metres and more than 5,000 square metres of vehicle decks.

The vessels will use electricity in port, courtesy of large lithium batteries, thus guaranteeing zero emissions whilst at berth. These batteries will be recharged during navigation, through shaft generators employing a peak shaving system. Additionally, an innovative air lubrication system will be installed to reduce hull resistance using a thin layer of bubbles below the keel.

The construction of Finnlines’ newest vessel to start

Finnlines newbuilding programme continues as planned. The construction of Finnlines’ newest environmentally friendly ro-ro vessel was started on 8 June 2020, with the steel cutting in the Chinese Nanjing Jinling shipyard.

All three ordered environmentally friendly hybrid ro-ro vessels will be built with the latest technology available to ensure the lowest CO2 emissions. In addition to lithium-ion battery systems that enables zero-emission operations in port, they will be equipped with efficient engines, emission abatement systems and an innovative air lubrication system to reduce hull resistance. The vessels will have the highest Finnish/Swedish ice class.

The first ro-ro vessel is expected to start operation as early as next year, and the other two in 2022.

In addition to this, Finnlines has also ordered two giant Superstar vessels, which will be pioneer in honouring green values. The total investment including five new vessels is EUR 500 million.

“The new vessels will modernize our fleet further and offer us the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions. These will be the most innovative and efficient ro-ro vessels in the world. We continue our successful track record in investing sustainable operation of our fleet”, says Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO of Finnlines.
