Finnlines to Stretch Two More Ships

Finish RoRo operator Finnlines, part of Grimaldi Group, has decided to lengthen two additional vessels within its EUR 70 million Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Program.

The program saw the lengthening of four vessels launched in 2017, with an option for two more.

The first two vessels, MS Finntide and MS Finnwave, have already been operating in their extended length.

The lengthening of MS Finnsky and MS Finnsun is expected to complete by the end of May 2018, while the final two vessels, MS Finnbreeze and MS Finnsea, are set to be stretched in September and December 2018.

Each lengthened vessel features 217.7 metres in length and a capacity of around 4,200 lane metres, resulting in 30 pct capacity boost.

“These two lengthened vessels in addition to the previous four, will help us meet increased demand and enable us to serve our customers more efficiently. One of our strategic decisions is to focus on improving our operational performance. This investment is also in line with sustainable development: by increasing our energy efficiency further we will contribute to reducing emissions per transported tonne,” Tom Pippingsköld, CFO of Finnlines, said.

The growing volumes and market demand have seen Finnlines sign a letter of intent for the construction of three new 7,300 lane metre ro-ro vessels, as revealed in February.

Further details on the potential order are yet to be informed by the company.

Further Finnlines’ vessels to be lengthened at Remontowa SA

Finnlines has entrusted Remontowa Shiprepair Yard SA in Gdansk, with the task of lengthening its two ro-ro vessels Finnbreeze and Finnsea, as a continuation of the lengthening programme executed at the Polish yard.

The Finnlines’ EUR 70 million Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Programme started in 2017 with the lengthening of its four ‘Breeze series’ vessels:Finntide, Finnwave, Finnsky and Finnsun with an option for two additional ones.

Finnlines has now decided to exercise the option for the lengthening of Finnbreeze and Finnsea.

Thanks to the lenghtening, the vessels will become more energy efficient and environmentally friendly by cutting emissions. Each one is to be lengthened with an approximately 30 m long insert, weighing some 1,500 tons each. After the modification the vessel is 217.7 metres long and has a capacity of around 4,200 lane metres.

The project has been executed on schedule. The first two vessels have already been converted at Remontowa, while the third one is scheduled to departure by the end of March. The fourth vessel is expected to arrive in April and will be lenghtened by the end of May, whilst the lengthening of Finnbreeze and Finnsea will be carried out in September–December 2018.

– These two lengthened vessels in addition to the previous four, will help us meet increased demand and enable us to serve our customers more efficiently – says Tom Pippingsköld, CFO of Finnlines.

The Finnsky ro-ro, 30 meters longer, sailed away

Finnish cargo ro-ro Finnsky, owned by the Finnish shipowner, is the third unit that has been recently lengthened at Remontowa SA shiprepair yard in Gdansk. Earlier, the shipyard extended two other, sister ships of the same owner: Finntide and Finnwave. The third Finnlines’ vessel left the yard on March 28, 2018.

The fourth ro-ro ship from the same series – Finnsun arrived for its lengthening operation on April 4 and is expected to leave the yard by the end of May.

The contract for the upgrade of the ferries was signed in March 2017. It concerned four ships with an option for another two. Finnlines used the option of “jumboisation” of further two ro-ro vessels of the “Breeze” class at Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa SA. The shipowner announced this in an official communiqué mid-March. Ferries number 5 and 6 – Finnbreeze and Finnsea will be lengthened between September and December this year.

Let us recall that every ship undergoing reconstruction, after cutting the hull midships, receives a steel insert weighing 1500 tons, 29.5 m long, 26.5 m wide and 23.5 m deep. Extending the length of ferries by almost 30 meters significantly improves their energy efficiency and thus contributes to the reduction of emissions of environmentally harmful compounds. Lengthening of ships is also the owner’s response to the growing demand for transport in the Baltic Sea. Modernized units, owing to the increased cargo area, can efficiently serve more cargo.
