ULSTEIN TO DESIGN NEW LNG-POWERED HEAVY LIFT VESSEL FOR JUMBO

Dutch transportation and installation contractor Jumbo has awarded Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V. the concept and basic design for their new, LNG powered DP2 Heavy Lift Crane Vessel.

In close cooperation with Jumbo, the new design is developed as a customised version of the ULSTEIN HX104 design. The vessel will be the largest X-BOW® vessel to date and with its two Huisman mast cranes of 2,200 and 400 ton respectively, will be capable to serve both the offshore wind and the offshore oil and gas industry. To minimise the environmental footprint, the vessel features dual fuel engines, enabling to operate on LNG.

“We are proud that Jumbo has entrusted us to design their new offshore asset. Especially as the contract award resulted from a design competition,” says Edwin van Leeuwen, Managing Director at Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V. “The lay-out of the vessel with the X-BOW® hull, results in a very cost efficient, safe and comfortable ship with excellent operational uptime and transit speed.”

Huisman cranes selected for Jumbo’s heavy lift crane vessel

Jumbo, an offshore transportation and installation contractor, has appointed Huisman Equipment for the design and construction of two offshore mast cranes for its heavy lift crane vessel (HLCV) to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.

To remind, Jumbo signed a letter of intent with China Merchants Industry Holdings in December 2017 for the engineering and construction of the HLCV.

It is worth noting that the new HLCV was designed in cooperation with Ulstein Design and Solutions.

Announcing the deal with Huisman, Jumbo said that the main crane of the HLVC would have a 2,500t capacity. Furthermore, Jumbo has opted for a triple hoist to allow complex upending operations and chose for an active heave compensation (AHC) auxiliary block of 600mt with a depth rating of 3,000 meters.

The second subsea crane will have the capacity for 400t with an AHC main hoist to control the position of a load relative to the seabed. This crane, positioned to easily service the moon pool, will also have a depth rating of 3,000 meters and will be equipped with a man-riding whip hoist.

Michael Kahn, managing director of Jumbo, said: “Our new HLCV, equipped with these cutting-edge cranes, enables Jumbo to further step-up, scale-up and diversify into the global offshore energy market.”

Jumbo added that environmental considerations and improved fuel efficiency were also factored into the design and that the vessel would be powered by dual-fuel engines with the ability to run on LNG.

According to the company, with a vessel length of 185 meters and a width of 36 meters, the HLCV will be the world’s largest X-BOW vessel.

Why do you think it is cancelled? I have not heard anything about that over here in the Netherlands. I will ask around though...

Was it ever a firm contract or still a LOI?

Also understand that the specification for the vessel have changed and the yard will not conclude on the contract?

A Dutch fellow shipspotter has also been looking into this and could not find any confirmation of a signed order nor an IMO number or anything. I will try to find out in m own network as well.

Seems like Jumbo want to continue building this one, but then at a different shipyard?
