First Kometa 120M Hydrofoil Vessel with Monolithic Polycarbonate Glazing Cruises between Sevastopol and Yalta

Kometa 120M hydrofoil vessel with monolithic polycarbonate glazing produced by Tekhnologiya ONPP made its first cruise on July 30, 2018. Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the Russian Federation Government, attended the official ceremony dedicated to the new route opening.

The glazing system developed for Kometa 120M vessels has very high impact resistance capability. Optical polycarbonate’s impact resilience is higher than that of silicate polycarbonate by more than 100 times and higher than that of organic glass by almost 10 times. Furthermore, the new glazing system‘s weight is lower as compared to previously used silicate glass system by two times. It guarantees efficient protection of the vessel crew and passengers and makes the vessel’s performance more stable while at sea.

The first glazing set consisting of 53 glazing elements for passenger cabins, a deck house, and other hydrofoil vessel’s premises was manufactured in 2017.

Andrey Silkin, Director General, Tekhnologiya ONPP, said: “Our proprietary technology permits manufacturing of glazing elements of virtually any shape while maintaining high optic properties. For the first time Russian-made monolithic polycarbonate glazing system has been installed at a Russian vessel. I think this is a good trend”.

Kometa 120 M vessels are built by Vympel, a shipbuilding plant located in Rybinsk. Vympel is a member of Kalashnikov Group owned by Rostekh Corporation. It is intended for passengers’ transportation on coastal lines. Vympel plant is to build two more vessels in 2019. Tekhnologiya ONPP plans to manufacture a glazing set for the first vessel in 2018, and a set for the third Kometa 120 M is to be produced in 2019.
