Saga Cruises announces new cruise ship will be named "Spirit of Discovery"

Wednesday 29 March 2017

Saga Cruises has today announced their new cruise ship will be named “Spirit of Discovery”.

The new ship will carry fewer than 1,000 passengers, retaining the intimacy and personal touch for which Saga is renowned and will have more than 100 cabins for solo travellers, 20% of the ships capacity.

Saga’s “Spirit of Discovery” will be delivered in Summer 2019 and will be built by the renowned Meyer Werft shipyard.

Robin Shaw, chief executive, Saga Cruises, said: “We have great pleasure in announcing our new ship will be named “Spirit of Discovery”.

In September 2015 we announced that we were to build our first cruise ship – we’re still on a high from that news. With the design nearing completion, today’s announcement is the next step on this exciting journey.

“The name “Spirit of Discovery” evokes the adventurous nature and new experiences that cruise customers desire.

Spirit of Discovery

Key to the whole design process has been our customer insight. We know they want to experience new things in a luxurious, small ship environment. Our new ship’s itineraries will take customers to fresh, new destinations and will include more overnight stays in key ports.”

This year Saga Cruises celebrates its 20th anniversary. Saga has to date operated previously owned ships which have been re-fitted to meet the needs of their customers.

Today, Saga has two small-sized ships, Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II, offering itineraries sailing from the UK to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the Caribbean and Canada and offering excellent standards of service, in qualitysurroundings with inclusive pricing.

Saga Cruises exercises option for second newbuild
CruiseUK-based Saga Cruises has exercised its option for a second newbuilding to be built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg.

To be named SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE, the 58,250 gt cruise ship will be delivered by the German yard in summer 2020 and will be a sister to SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY, due to be delivered in June 2019.

The order comes on the back of very strong pre-sales for the company's first-ever newbuilding. The operator's loyal customers have played a key role in the design process and the all-balcony ship class will boast the typical intimacy Saga Cruises has become renowned for.

The ships have a length of 236m and a 31.2m beam, accommodating 999 passengers which guarantees a high passenger space ratio.

Saga Cruises is a niche player in the cruise industry, primary targeting the UK market and passengers should be 50-plus or be accompanied by someone who's 50-plus.

Construction work under way for “Spirit of Discovery”
Posted Feb 28,2018

The new ship in the Saga Cruises fleet is starting to take shape. The first sections and blocks are now being constructed at Meyer Werft’s Building Dock I

Construction work has begun in Papenburg on the first new ship for the British shipping company, Saga Cruises. Today, Meyer Werft started its steel-cutting process for the “Spirit of Discovery”, the first ship to be delivered in summer 2019.

Lance Batchelor (CEO of Saga Group) and Tim Meyer (Managing Director of Meyer Werft) pressed the start button on the computer-operated cutting machine that will process the first sheets of steel for the new ship. This marked the start of the ship’s production. This project will “reactivate” Meyer Werft’s Building Dock I, which is not currently being used to manufacture new ships. It also means three cruise ships will now be delivered to various customers in 2019 and 2020, as opposed to the two ships that were originally planned.

The “Spirit of Discovery” is the first of two ships for the successful English cruise line. The ships each have an overall length of 236 metres, a width of 31.2 metres and a tonnage measurement of 58,250 GT. 999 passengers can be accommodated. Another new ship will follow in summer 2020.

The new ships will be tailored to the English market with a completely new design to make them stand out in every port, and their interior design and technology will set new standards.

Spirit of Discovery’s keel is laid down

The keel has been laid down for the first block, and the hull can now be assembled in Building Dock I

The keel was laid down today for Spirit of Discovery, the first new vessel for the British shipping company SAGA Cruises at the MEYER WERFT shipyard in Papenburg. The first block of the new ship weighs 320 tonnes and is 5.5 metres high, 23.5 metres long and 20 metres wide. This is the first ship of its kind for Great Britain and will be delivered in summer 2019.

Lance Batchelor (Chief Executive Officer of the Saga Group), Sir Sebastian Wood (British ambassador in Berlin) and Tim Meyer (Managing Director of Meyer Werft) came together to lay a “lucky penny” underneath the first block. The block has been lowered onto the dock bracing, and now the hull can be assembled. This is also going to use Building Dock I again for complete new builds at the shipyard. It also means three cruise ships will now be delivered to various customers in 2019 and 2020, as opposed to the two ships that were originally planned. “This implies that we do offer additional jobs for specialists within our organisation”, said Tim Meyer.

The “Spirit of Discovery” is the first of two ships for the successful English cruise line, SAGA. The ships have an overall length of 236 metres, a width of 31.2 metres and a tonnage measurement of 58,250 GT. They can accommodate 999 passengers. Another new ship will follow in summer 2020.

The new ships will be tailored to the English market with a completely new design to make them stand out in every port, and their interior design and technology will set new standards.

Saga Sets Date for New Ship Christening

Save the date for Saga's first-ever new ship christening. The British brand announced the Spirit of Discovery will be christened at the Port of Dover on July 5, 2019.

It will be the first ship to be named at Dover following the £250m redevelopment of Dover Western Docks.

“As the place that Saga’s first cruise ship set sail from more than 20 years ago, Dover was the natural choice," revealed Chief Operating Officer Nigel Blanks.

“With Saga’s Group headquarters based in Kent, we felt it only right that we name our first brand new, purpose-built cruise ship in Kent and what better way to do that than with the iconic White Cliffs of Dover as a backdrop. Spirit of Discovery will be the first cruise ship to be named in the port for more than a decade and the first following the regeneration of the Western Docks. We are already planning a few surprises, and will no doubt add a few more before next year, so save the date, as we christen the first of our new-build fleet," Blanks noted.

The Spirit of Discovery’s maiden voyage, A British First, will sail from Dover on July 10, 2019. The 999-guest luxury boutique ship will circumnavigate the British Isles, the company said.

“We are really excited about her first cruise as it’s a great way to show-off our first new boutique cruise-ship to the British market as we call in to iconic ports such as Newcastle, Edinburgh, Belfast and Liverpool,” added Blanks.

The inaugural cruise has already sold out and most other 2019 itineraries are well ahead of expectations with the 109 single cabins proving extremely popular, Saga said.

The Spirit of Discovery’s destinations throughout summer 2019 include Spain, Scandinavia and the Baltic, as well as a four-night mini-cruise to Holland, Germany and Belgium.

In addition, Saga recently announced the company’s strategic decision to move to all-inclusive cruising as standard from 2020.

Blanks said: "The decision to go all-inclusive in 2020 had been made to distance ourselves further from the competition and mass cruise market”. He said: “I firmly believe this will not only sit very well alongside our ‘Boutique Cruising’ proposition but will reaffirm our position as Britain’s niche luxury cruise operator."

Spirit of Discovery leaves building dock I at MEYER WERFT earlier

The float out will start at approx. 2:30 am on Sunday

Due to the weather conditions, Spirit of Discovery, the first of two new cruise ships for the British cruise line Saga Cruises, will be leaving the covered building dock I at MEYER WERFT shipyard six hours earlier.

The manoeuvre is now scheduled to start at approx. 2:30 am on Sunday, 12 May. During the float out, the ship’s mast and funnel will be lifted on the ship. At approx. 2:00 pm, Spirit of Discovery will be moved to the out-fitting pier for different tests. Afterwards the ship will berth at the oufitting pier at approx. 6:00 pm.

All times are subject to the weather.

During the following days, more tests will be executed at the outfitting pier. The first crew members of Spirit of Discovery will also move into their cabins on board. The Ems conveyance is currently planned for end of May from Papenburg to Emden.

River Conveyance of Spirit of Discovery

The new cruise ship for British Saga Cruises, Spirit of Discovery, will probably leave Papenburg on Sunday, May 26 2019 to be conveyed on the river Ems to Emden. The ship is planned to arrive in Emden on Monday, May 27, at 08.00 am. Later on the ship will go through several days of technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea.

The Ems barrier will be helping Spirit of Discovery to pass through the river Ems, a procedure which will be kept as short as possible. The following schedule has been drawn up for the conveyance of the new cruise ship, with changes possible at short notice due to the weather and tidal conditions:

Sunday, May 26, 2019
Approx. 09.00 pm: ship in waiting position (Papenburg)
Approx. 10.00 pm: ship passes sea lock (Papenburg)

Monday, May 27, 2019
Approx. 00.30 am: ship passes Friesenbrücke (Weener)
Approx. 02.30 am: ship passes the Jann Berghaus bridge (Leer)
Approx. 05.00 am: arrival at the river Ems barrier (Gandersum)
Approx. 06.45 am: ship passes the Ems barrier
Approx. 08.00 am: arrival Emden sea lock

!! All details are subject to the wind, weather and water levels and are therefore without guarantee. Timings can be changed at short notice!!

Once again, a team of river pilots from Emden will be responsible for manoeuvring the ship to Emden. The pilots on the river Ems also looked after the MEYER WERFT ships during their passage to the North Sea in previous years. The whole team trained the conveyance at the computerised simulator in Wageningen (Netherlands) to be better prepared for the task.

Spirit of Discovery will proceed in reverse up the river Ems to the North Sea. This approach has proven successful in the past as it makes it easier to manoeuvre the ship. Two tugs will be providing assistance in the process.

Spirit of Discovery is the first of two ships for the successful British cruise line. The ships each have an overall length of 236 metres, a width of 31.2 metres and a tonnage measurement of 58,250 GT. The sister ship, Spirit of Adventure, will be completed by MEYER WERFT in summer 2020.

Meanwhile, MEYER WERFT continues to work flat out on other ships: building dock II currently houses the Norwegian Encore which is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2019 for Norwegian Cruise Line (USA), while Iona for P&O is planned to be completed in spring 2020.

MEYER WERFT hands over Spirit of Discovery

Second of three new cruise ships in 2019 delivered

Today MEYER WERFT handed over Spirit of Discovery to the British cruise line Saga Cruises. The vessel with a rating of 58,250 GT is already the second new build completed by MEYER WERFT in 2019 after Spectrum of the Seas was delivered to Royal Caribbean International in April.

“With great team effort we already completed two modern cruise ships this year”, says Tim Meyer, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT.

Spirit of Discovery stands out with an environmental friendly and resource conserving Design. For the first time MEYER WERFT equipped a ship with the eSiPod propulsion system delivered by Siemens.

Earlier this month, the keel laying for Spirit of Adventure, Saga Cruises’ second new build, was celebrated at MEYER WERFT. Spirit of Adventure will be completed in summer 2020. The ships each have an overall length of 236 metres, a width of 31.2 metres, 999 passengers can be accommodated.

Therefore MEYER WERFT will complete three new cruise ships in 2020 as well. In au-tumn 2019, Norwegian Encore is scheduled to be the third vessel delivered by MEYER WERFT this year.
