We're honored to be actively engaged in initiatives to advance green shipping and thrilled to announce our recent contract with Torghatten Nord AS for the construction of an electric ferry.
This all-electric vessel, equipped with batteries, will serve for transportation for passengers, vehicles, and cargo between Norwegian islands. Spanning 73.3 meters in length and 14.3 meters in width, the ferry is scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2026.
Our team has been preparing for this project in collaboration with the Lithuanian-Norwegian shipbuilding cluster, a platform that boasts extensive experience and stellar reputations in the realm of electric vessel construction.
The ferry designation is NSD 50CFb, developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company in close collaboration with Torghatten Nord. The building process will involve collective expertise of various companies within the WESTERN SHIPYARD GROUP, ensuring a synergy for a high-quality outcome. Our colleagues and strategic partners WESTERN BALTIC ENGINEERING will hold an exceptional role in the development of detailed blueprints and construction documentation.
Vitalij Frolov, director Western Baltija Shipbuilding, emphasizes that this project not only aligns with current shipping trends but also underscores over 70 years of shipbuilding legacy in Klaipeda, including multiple turnkey ferry projects.
‘We appreciate the longstanding trust between Lithuanian shipbuilders and Norwegian counterparts, as evidenced by the contract with Torghatten Nord AS. We're entering the electric ship market as active participants in the evolving global marine engineering industry, eager to leverage our experience, knowledge, and collaborative potential to deliver a high-value product for the Norwegian market’, says V. Frolov.
Eirik Olsen, COO of Torghatten Nord AS is pleased with signing a contract with Western Baltija Shipbuilding.
‘This is the first contract between Torghatten Nord and Western Baltija Shipbuilding and hopefully a starting point for future partnership’.
Gjermund Johannessen, CEO of The Norwegian Ship Design Company is pleased to be chosen to design yet another new low energy battery electric ferry design to Torghatten Nord.
‘We look forward to continuing our good cooperation with both Torghatten Nord and Western Baltija Shipbuilding during construction and realization’.
