FRANKFURT, Feb 12 (Reuters) - TUI Cruises, a joint venture between TUI Group and Royal Caribbean Cruises, is ordering a new ship to expand its fleet to seven vessels from 2023, a TUI spokesman said on Monday, confirming a newspaper report.

* German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported that TUI Cruises would order an additional cruise ship from Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku Oy for about 500 million euros ($614 million).

* The TUI spokesman declined to say how much TUI Cruises would pay for the new ship.

* He said the purchase would be financed in a similar way as previous orders, with about 80 percent debt-financed and 20 percent covered by its own funds.

* The new vessel will be about the same size as two ships TUI Cruises already has on order. Those ships are due to be delivered this year and next year and each have capacity of about 2,900 passengers.

* Those two ships are due to replace smaller ships in TUI Cruises’ existing fleet, though FAZ said the company could hold off retiring one of them, Mein Schiff 2, longer than planned to keep up with rising demand for cruise travel.

Production of Mein Shiff 7 launched at the Meyer Turku shipyard

The traditional steel-cutting ceremony initiated the construction of the last ship in the Mein Schiff series at the Turku shipyard on Tuesday 14th June. Representatives from both Meyer and the customer, German TUI Cruises, had gathered in the Meyer Turku steel panel hall for the celebration.

"We are really exited to continue the long and successful partnership with TUI Cruises. We have again been focusing on optimizing the design in regards of energy efficiency and technologies to increase sustainability and make this ship the finest in the entire series", comments Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

The ship will offer its 2,849 guests elements familiar from the Mein Schiff concept, such as a large number of outdoor cabins with balconies. For example, the diverse selection of bars and restaurants and the 25-meter swimming pool will also be there. Many features will be updated to make them even more interesting with the latest solutions available.

Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, is delighted: “After two years of pandemics, we have returned to our course and will continue to grow as planned. Mein Schiff 7 will take us forward in our work for more environmentally friendly cruise tourism. The ship will be built so that it can be used with methanol. In addition, the ship's operations in the port are almost emission-free. Mein Schiff 7 is an important milestone in our efforts to provide the first climate-neutral cruises by 2030. ”
