Viking Cruises Orders Another Six Ships
March 06, 2018

Fincantieri and Viking Ocean Cruises have announced that they entered an agreement for six further ocean ships, which would lead to a total number of 16 930-guest ships by 2027.

The understanding for the new ships, whose delivery is scheduled for the years 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, is subject to specific conditions, according to a statement.

Fincantieri and Viking said they will develop an advanced project based on the successful characteristics of the previous ships, updated and revisited in line with the latest technologies available on the market.

On the sidelines of today’s announcement, Giuseppe Bono,CEO of Fincantieri, commented: “We are proud to have trusted a start up which has proved highly successful. In 2012, in fact, the partnership with this prestigious ship owner began with two ships and as of today we nearly count 16 units. It’s an all-time record, the highest number of ships from one single ship owner for a shipyard, which makes Viking, already the worldwide first river cruise company, the leader also in the small ship ocean cruise market”. Bono then continued: “Furthermore, the agreement confirms the extraordinary moment of the demand in this sector. This allows Fincantieri to consolidate its worldwide leadership, laying the groundwork to enhance the order book with a workload ensuring today work safety for the next 10 years”.

This sounds more like a Memorandum. It will take some time before it is firmed up, I think. No yard in their right mind will already firmly commit to such a large series of ships when the first delivery is still six years away.

FINCANTIERI AND VIKING SIGN CONTRACTS FOR 2 SHIPS

Trieste, March 4th, 2019 – In the context of the agreement announced in March 2018 for the construction of 6 ships, Fincantieri and Viking signed the contracts for the first 2 units, which will be delivered respectively in 2024 and 2025.

In partnership with the shipowner, Fincantieri will develop an advanced project based on the successful characteristics of the previous ships, upgraded and revisited in line with the latest available technologies. Viking’s current ocean fleet includes ships having exclusively all-veranda staterooms, a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons with accommodation for 930 passengers in 465 cabins.

Fincantieri started its partnership with Viking in 2012, trusting the shipowner who was entering the ocean cruise market as a start-up. Today, the cooperation which first began with an order for two ships, has reached a total of 20 units, including the order awarded to Vard for two special cruise ships and the options. This is an all-time record, the largest number of units built by a shipbuilder for one sole shipowner.

The first of the series, “Viking Star”, has been built at the shipyard in Marghera and delivered in 2015. The other units, “Viking Sea”, “Viking Sky”, “Viking Sun”, and “Viking Orion”, handed over in 2016, 2017 and 2018, were all built at the Ancona yard, as well as “Viking Jupiter”, which joined the shipowner’s fleet in February. Other 10 units, options included, for Viking Cruises will take to the sea from the Group’s Italian yards between 2021 and 2027. Furthermore, Vard, together with Fincantieri, is also specializing in the construction of expedition vessels. In this context, the company has acquired the order from Viking for 2 special cruise ships, with an option for two more vessels, which will be built in the Group’s yards.

FINCANTIERI WILL BUILD FOUR FURTHER CRUISE SHIPS FOR VIKING

The vessels for this ship owner are 18 in total

Trieste, September 9, 2022 – In the context of the announcement for six options dated March 2018, Fincantieri and Viking have put into effect the contracts for the third and fourth ships. The companies also have signed the contract for the fifth and sixth units, subject to access to financing as per industry practice. The total value of the agreements is about euro 1.7 billion.

Deliveries are scheduled respectively in 2026, 2027 and two in 2028.

For this batch of six vessels, which follows the 10 units ordered from 2012, Fincantieri has developed in partnership with the shipowner a project based on the successful features of the previous ships, upgraded and revisited with the latest technologies. The Viking units will be built according to the latest navigation regulations and equipped with the most modern safety systems. This new generation of ships is also designed for hydrogen fuel cells and will set a new standard for the industry.

As of today, the collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking reaches a total of 18 vessels, including two purpose-built expedition vessels of the subsidiary Vard, confirming the recovery of the cruise sector, which is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2023
