Baffin Fisheries Takes Delivery of New Vessel – Inuksuk II
Monday, September 30, 2024, Yalova, Turkey – Baffin Fisheries is pleased to announce it has taken delivery of its new 80-metre fishing trawler, Inuksuk II, at the Tersan Shipyard in Turkey. The state-of-the-art stern trawler becomes the largest Canadian owned fishing vessel, and will soon begin operations in the Eastern Arctic, harvesting shrimp and Greenland halibut (Turbot) for its Inuit owners.
“We are thrilled to have made this significant investment for the people of our communities in the Baffin region of Nunavut and appreciate all the attention and effort that has been invested in Inukshuk II by all involved,” said Baffin Fisheries Chair Kelly Kilabuk, who was in Turkey for negotiations and planning for the vessel’s voyage to Canada for fishing trials and naming ceremony later this year. “This beautiful vessel will serve us well for decades to come, and will be an exciting, rewarding place to work.”
The vessel includes a processing and freezing plant with two production lines for frozen-at-sea shrimp and groundfish. The modern factory includes two large automated plate freezers, three shrimp tunnels, a sorting robot, and automated palletizing to complement the twin-trawl capabilities. The vessel has a capacity of up to 1,300 ton of Greenland halibut, or 900 ton of shrimp.
“The Inuksuk II will provide a much more modern, safe, and efficient working environment for our crew, and increase profitability and reliability for our owners,” Chris Flanagan, CEO, said from Turkey. “We owe a great deal of thanks to our crew and staff who have been managing this incredibly complex project at this well-known shipyard for the past two years.”
The vessel is designed for operations in the North Atlantic and polar regions.
Designed by Skipsteknisk of Norway and built under the supervision of DNV Class Society, Inuksuk II can accommodate 38 crew members, offering hotel-like living quarters, a gym, sauna, and dining areas.
Vessel financing was led by Scotiabank and included direct lending from Export Development Canada (EDC). The Canadian Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is providing a $3M repayable contribution towards the vessel.
