Polskie Promy, fully owned by Polska Zegluga Morska (PZM), have signed a contract with Remontowa Shipbuilding for three new hybrid ro-pax ferries, two of which will be built for their Unity Line subsidiary, and one likely for Polferries charter.

The RMDC (Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting) designed ferries will have four LNG dual-fuel engines and a battery pack, making them capable of 19 knots. They will be 195.6m long and have a capacity for 4,100 lanemetres of freight and 400 passengers.
The contract holds an option for a fourth unit.

Før jernteppets fall hadde Polen tre statseide rederier; Polskie Linie Oceaniczne, PLO, Polskie Zegluga Baltycka, PZB og Polskie Zegluga Morska, PZM.

Seems so, that LNG is the technical solution for this decade (20ies) now until very new battery-/hybrid-/hydrogen- etc. systems are coming in the 30ies. Especially here 2 points i am wondering about these 3-4 polish newbuildings:

1) The Pax-capacity of only 400 is really small. Actually old ferries of Unity-Line and Polferries has often around or much more than 1000 Pax - but much less then 2000 lm. With the newbuildings lane-meters of 4100 up to more than 200 truck-drivers needs a bed onboard, so there is nearly no space anymore for touristbuses, caravans, motorhomes and cars. Also often some smaller trucks are onboard (Sprinter-class/Atego), what means that it can be much more than 200 drivers also on a fullboked departure nearly without trailers. If not another new ferry is planned with a bigger Pax-capacity (as f.ex. HONFLEUR) there is a big chance especially for TT-Line to take the complete market in the future of cars, foot-passengers, touristbuses, caravans and motorhomes with ferries with a bigger Pax-capacity, f.ex. the AKKA with max. 744 Pax (and "only" 2600 lm). Furthermore the polish newbuildings gets exactly the "Nynäshamn-max-size" - but especially for this route is a high Pax capacity needed.
2) The speed is relatively slowly planned with only 19 knots. The most other newbuildings are faster today, the new Nils Holgersson was recorded with 25 knots on sea-trials, Honfleur with 23,6 (but more is possible), Aura Seaways 26 knots, Viking Glory 23 knots, Stenas E-Flexer ca. 22-23 knots etc. . Especially with delays the polish newbuildings will then have problems and other ferry-companies can theoretic offer more flexible and faster timetables in the next ca. 30 years.
So if nothing surprising happens (as f.ex. a buy of HONFLEUR) in the longtime future Polferries and Unity are "slowly freight-ferries" only... :( .

These two new ferries planned for Unity Line will replace Gryf and Wolin on the route to Trelleborg. Hence, a smaller number of passenger capacities, as Polonia and Skania will still remain passenger ferries on the Unity Line service.
