Crystal Officially Signs Order with Lloyd Werft to Build Eight New Ships

Crystal Endeavor, Crystal Exclusive Class™ ship and six luxury river yachts will be delivered from 2017 to 2019

LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2016 – Crystal Cruises, “The World’s Most Awarded Luxury Cruise Line” today announced that it has signed an order for its eight new ships with the Lloyd Werft Group, a collection of four shipyards in Northern Germany. The signing was done by Crystal President and CEO Edie Rodriguez in the presence of Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman of Crystal Cruises; Rüdiger Pallentin, Managing Director of the Lloyd Werft Group; Uwe Beckmeyer, State Secretary of Maritime Affairs; Erwin Sellering, Prime Minister of State Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; and Martin Günthner, Senator for Economics and Port Affairs of Free Hanseatic City of Bremen State, as well as other distinguished members of Germany’s Federal and State Governments.

“We are pleased to build eight Crystal ships with Lloyd Werft, and are confident that the expert management and shipbuilding team and the excellent group of shipbuilding contractors and suppliers in Northern Europe will deliver extraordinary vessels that are worthy of the esteemed Crystal brand,” said Tan Sri KT Lim. “We appreciate the continued support of the German Federal and State Governments and their representation here today.”

Crystal will build six new luxury river yachts to be deployed on European rivers with deliveries from 2017 to 2019. The two additional river yachts are the result of continued interest and demands from travel partners and guests, and join the four previously announced vessels - Crystal Debussy, Crystal Ravel, Crystal Mahler and Crystal Bach – planned for embarkation in June and August 2017. Crystal River Cruises makes its official debut this summer with launch of reimagined Crystal Mozart on July 13 in Vienna, Austria.

Additionally, the first purpose-built Polar Class luxury megayacht, Crystal Endeavor, will accommodate just 200 guests, and take travelers to the Arctic and Antarctic Circles in addition to warm water cruising. The final ship included in the agreement is the first of three Crystal Exclusive Class™ ships – which will weigh 117,000 gross tons – will accommodate 1,000 guests and residents and is set for delivery in fall 2019. The Exclusive Class ships will also be equipped to sail the far reaches of the globe, including Polar and Arctic regions.

“The new Exclusive Class ships, yachts and river yachts planned for the coming years provide travelers with an exhilarating glimpse into the future of luxury travel of all kinds, from rugged expedition adventures to indulgently relaxing river cruises,” said Rodriguez. “In the agreement with Lloyd Werft for the building of these astounding new vessels, we are again reinforcing Crystal’s position as the leader in luxury travel and hospitality, as we continue to cater to virtually every wish of the discerning modern traveler.”

The agreement will also reinforce the reputation of the Lloyd Werft shipyard company as the preeminent producer of world-class ships, while supporting local communities in the region.

“Crystal’s order of eight brand new luxury vessels will not only make a lasting mark on the luxury travel industry, but also supports the local communities surrounding the Lloyd Werft shipyard locations,” says Pallentin. “The number of projects for the company will support jobs for nearly 2,000 residents of Bremerhaven, Wismar, Warnemünde and Stralsund and will significantly boost the local economies.”

Crystal Cruises is the “World’s Most Awarded Luxury Cruise Line,” having earned more “World’s Best” accolades than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort in history.  Crystal Cruises has won “World’s Best Cruise Ship” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader Choice Awards for 22 years; been voted “World’s Best Large Ship Cruise Line” by Travel + Leisure readers for 20 consecutive years; and the “Best Luxury Cruise Line” by Virtuoso for two-consecutive years (2014 & 2015). In summer 2015, Crystal embarked on the most significant brand expansion in the history of luxury travel and hospitality, introducing three new classes of cruising – the recently launched Crystal Yacht Cruises (December 2015), Crystal River Cruises (July 2016), Crystal Exclusive Class Ocean Cruises (Fall 2019), Crystal Luxury Air (April 2016) and Crystal AirCruises (2017).

Construction Starts on Crystal Expedition Ship

January 15, 2018

Steel was cut today at MV Werften for the new Crystal Endeavor, a luxury expedition yacht. Compared to previous renderings, the ship now sports an updated exterior look (pictured above).

Delivery is now scheduled for 2020, according to the shipyard.

Employees and guests watched as the flame cutter was launched by Genting Hong Kong Chairman and CEO, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay; Crystal President and CEO, Tom Wolber; Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister, Harry Glawe; and Stralsund Mayor, Dr. Alexander Badrow.

“The ‘Crystal Endeavor’ is a truly exceptional ship. We are proud to be able to implement this project and are particularly pleased to, once again, be starting shipbuilding activities in the Stralsund shipyard, creating hundreds of new jobs,” said Jarmo Laakso, CEO of MV WERFTEN.

“We look forward to this innovative expedition yacht with great anticipation in the Stralsund shipyard,” said Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Genting Hong Kong Chairman and CEO. “A highlight is our investment of over 20 million euros in new equipment so that the Stralsund shipyard will be able to build cruise ships efficiently in the future.”

"With the first steel cutting in Stralsund, MV WERFTEN successfully continues the course it has forged in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The further development of shipbuilding in the state will be the next stage of this company. Every newly built ship helps to safeguard the region's future. Important industrial jobs are being created in Western Pomerania," stated Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Harry Glawe.

Thanks as always Oddgeir!

Two things: the yard is now MV Werften Stralsund, not Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven. Yardno is still the same: 124
The renderings under your second post are not the newest, they are from August 2016. This is the latest rendering, showing much more details:

This picture is also quite interesting. Some more details of the ship on the noticeboard to the left of the important gentlemen (tip: if you click on the picture, you will find it is hi-res):

Yes correct, the whole design was changed completely in 2016. The ship became shorter and the tonnage also went down, from the proposed 25,000 GT to approx 19,800 GT now. Probably this will not be the last change. The whole MV Werften venture is still very much in the start-up phase. While the yards already existed for a long time, they were not at all prepared to build cruise ships. Genting has had to make massive investments in supporting infrastructure such as new panel cutting lines and a new cabin factory. Genting has lost quite some money on starting up the three yards (Wismar, Warnemünde and Stralsund): http://www.seatrade-cruise.com/news...loss-on-crystal-yard-genting-dream-costs.html

Is MV Werften the naval architect/developer of the conceptual design? Because exterior and interior design are from Tillberg Design International

I don't know. MV Werften have been getting a lot of help from Finland, from companies like Deltamarin...

MV Werften Lays Keel for Polar-Class Crystal Endeavor

The keel of Crystal Endeavor, the world’s largest and most spacious polar-class expedition yacht, was laid in MV Werften Stralsund shipyard on August 21.

Featuring 20,000 gross tons with just 200 guests, the luxury expedition yacht will be 164 meters long.
Once the traditional lucky coins had been put into place, the 400-ton section was lowered onto the keel blocks.

“We are pleased that after two years of design, we are now able to celebrate the keel laying of the Crystal Endeavor, the most valuable ship to be built at the Stralsund shipyard so far,” Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Genting Hong Kong’s Executive Chairman, CEO, said.

The first steel cut for Crystal Endeavor took place in January. The delivery is scheduled for the end of 2019/early 2020 for a series of charters and Crystal Endeavor’s inaugural season will start after the Tokyo Olympics in August 2020.

“The construction of this sophisticated ship is progressing as planned,” said Peter Fetten, CEO of MV Werften.

“Around 500 employees will be involved in the construction of Crystal Endeavor at the Stralsund site. In addition, around 500 skilled subcontractors will be brought in from outside of the company – creating sustainable value for the region.”

Crystal Updates Launch Timeline of Crystal Endeavor

MIAMI, April 9, 2020 – Crystal Expedition Cruises has postponed the launch of its luxury expedition ship, Crystal Endeavor. The news comes following the temporary closure of the MV WERFTEN shipyards, which halted operations in ship production to protect its employees during the COVID-19 global pandemic like most European manufacturing companies. Due to uncertainty regarding when production will resume, Crystal has been compelled to delay the introduction of the ship – previously planned for this coming August – and cancel all scheduled itineraries through October 31, 2020. The ship’s maiden voyage will now be the Tasmania & Fjords of New Zealand 14-night cruise embarking on November 14, 2020.

“We know that, like us, our guests have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to explore anew with Crystal aboard this groundbreaking ship, and we deeply regret that this change has become necessary and has disrupted our guests’ travel plans,” said Crystal’s president and CEO, Tom Wolber. “While this unprecedented global health crisis inhibits our journeys for now, we are looking ahead with great optimism to introducing Crystal Endeavor to the world on November 14 and welcoming travelers to their next great adventure.”

The company is reaching out to guests and their travel advisors directly with rebooking options.

A "naming ceremony"? Not delivered yet if you look in the register of DNV GL. Also getting a bit tired of every upmarket smaller cruiseship being referred to as a "yacht". A yacht is private vessel or only available for private charter. If you can book a cabin on it, it is NOT a yacht.
